IUCN Member Les Eco Maires joins the IUCN Urban Alliance, bringing political clout and technical expertise to the cause of ecological urbanism.
Since 1989, Les Eco Maires—“the National Association of Mayors and Local Elected Officials for the Environment and Sustainable Development”—has brought together municipalities and public establishments of inter-communal cooperation (EPCIs) to champion the pursuit of a safe, healthy and sustainable environment. Les Eco Maires aims to promote the best local environmental initiatives and to encourage all types of sustainability actions by Mayor, Presidents, land developers, and citizens.
Alongside ministries and public and private partners, our association is at the forefront of societal and environmental trends and serves as an interface between the local and the national, the national and the European, and it has long been innovating in the domain of decentralized cooperation for environmental protection. It promotes Cities to Government and Cities to Cities interfaces at all levels, on the model of the countries of Northern Europe.
Having followed the work of IUCN for many years, Les Eco Maires formally joined the Union in 2015, bringing excellence and expertise in working with communities.
In February 2021, the association took part to the World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi to participate in the debate on urban resilience and adaptation to climate change, the development of cities according to the Sustainable Development Goals, and the fight against artificialization of soils.
By engaging a network of elected officials who represent a wide range of French cities, and by developing tools and providing support to those cities, the association promotes ecological urbanism and fosters inclusive, economically responsible and environmentally sustainable cities.
