World Environment Day 2025: IUCN in Jeju, Republic of Korea

The Republic of Korea, in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will host the celebrations for World Environment Day 2025, to be held on 5th June in Jeju under the theme of ‘ Ending global plastic pollution’. Remarkably, this year’s host venue, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, has set an ambitious goal to eliminate plastic pollution by 2040.

World Environment Day is one of the largest environmental events in the
world, jointly organized by the UN Environment Programme and the host
country on June 5 every year since 1973, to pledge the international
community’s interest and efforts in environmental conservation.

As part of the event, IUCN has been invited to provide congratulatory remarks and a keynote during a workshop focused on Urban Nature-based Solutions, organised by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea and the National Institute of Ecology. The event will aim at strengthening the collaboration between the two institutions and IUCN, as well as raising awareness of the importance of actions to enhance urban nature.
