The IUCN Urban Protected Areas: Profiles and Best Practice Guidelines were produced by the Urban Conservation Strategies Specialist Group of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). The publication comprises a set of 30 practical guidelines illuminated with 15 detailed case studies to help urban protected area managers address the challenges and opportunities associated with urbanisation.
Guidelines 1 to 11 focus on people, offering tips for enhancing access, engendering a sense of local ownership, mobilising volunteers, promoting good environmental behaviour and facilitating healthy lifestyles. Guidelines 12 to 17 focus on places, suggesting ways to enhance landscape connectivity, infuse nature into the built environment, control encroachment, manage water and wildfires, and reduce noise and light pollution. Guidelines 18 to 22 focus on institutions, specifically cooperation, coalition building, academic partnerships, and learning exchanges. Finally, guidelines 20 to 30 focus on the promotion, establishment and improvement of urban protected areas.
